Caryl Churchill
Who is Caryl Churchill ?
Caryl Churchill is one of the greatest dramatists who is widely known for her informative theories. In other words, she takes extra time to make the society understand how women are important and understandable beings. That is why she also acts as a human rights activist. To date, Caryl Churchill is still known as one of the remarkable writers that are widely accepted by all ages. It was during her teenage life that her interest in writing developed. She first landed a dramatist position in a popular video. From there henceforth, her reputation earned her several awards.
In 2012, her play ‘Love and Information’ was enacted in the Royal Court and received critical as well as popular acclaim. It deals with the concept of modern day consciousness and the need of human bonding and intimacy.
"Caryl Churchill X Love Information"
Love and information is a series of tantalising scenes with over 100 vibrant characters who search for meanings in their lives. Through sex, death, feeling, thinking and karaoke they discover each other. Within their intimate whispers, philosophical exchanges and life-changing revelations, we see ourselves and the people we love.
After reading the play as a collective I realised that Churchill’s way of writing is so honest and true that you can’t help but love this play. The way she bring everyday situations and conversations to light shows attention to detail. I feel that you can find the freedom to explore each section separately which is rather intriguing. Unlike many plays each subtitle doesn’t correlate to the next, and each section has no link to one another. I actually found this rather intriguing to be able to explore this play in so many different ways and techniques.
Themes & Idea
LOVE
Most of the scenes in Love and Information are dialogues,
occurring between two characters and portraying an insight
into their relationship. The dialogues also reveal the human
need for connection and how information and technology
impact upon these connections.
All of the sections have a place in which it is coming from .So in my opinion the section are the important parts of a whole story but we can act it any way that we want.
A Selection of Scenes
The script of Love and Information does not indicate who the characters are or who is speaking at any given moment, although the inference is that characters are alternating lines (at least in the scenes that feature only two characters).
“Secret”
Opening lines:
Please please tell me
no
please because I’ll never
Scene: One person attempts to get another to reveal a big secret

“Mother” Opening lines:
what?
I’ve something to tell you
Scene: An older sister presents a startling truth to her sibling

“Grass” Opening lines:
What did you do that for?
I thought
What do you think’s going to happen to you?
Scene: Much to the chagrin of their significant other, a person gives the police an anonymous tip about a criminal.
“Recluse” (featuring three characters) Opening lines:
Don’t answer it’s only
look through the spy hole
Scene: A man named Mr. Bradshaw is forced by a journalist camped outside his door to invent an absurd story in response to an interrogation.
Staging
After sitting in my room and in my blog context classes, watching and reading the play over and over again in complete and utter confusion. Why is it being preformed in a box with very few props? The white-box set is seamlessly transformed into an infinite number of locations, from gym to hospital to swanky bar. The scene changes are incredibly slick, continually propelling the play forward despite blackouts, which in a less masterful play I would find distractedly jarring. Apart from informative scene names, Churchill’s script gives almost no information about space, place or character. The action is dictated rather by the recurring themes that connect the stories together, weaving a wonderful web of complex emotions, memories, secrets and facts. The audience fills in these gaps in information with their own understanding, conjuring up backstories for the strangers on the stage.
Decisions
Mostly all of our decisions were made in our context classes where we would make most of our decisions for our end production to come out Amazing !.
Production
After watching and discussing a lot on how we want the play to we finally made a decision to let everyone have there own thoughts on what they wanted on there scene so it was fair that everyone their story they wanted to. In terms of lighting we didn't go to crazy on it seeing as the scene where not too long like the other plays we have done before.
Earthquake:Technical:For the lighting we wanted a simple spotlight on the both of us so that the audience could capture our scene. For humour preferences we thought that we could play news round music at the beginning and the end for the audience to feel as if they really are in the broadcasting room.I know great idea.
Star:Technical:A spotlight would really help because I think the scene has a lot of information and a spotlight is a powerful stage lighting instrument and I feel because its so short it will give the scene power.
Dream:Technical:For our tech we where thinking prom night once the slow songs starts to come one . so we went for a good old classic disco ball light glistening on our foreheads for the humour and to top it all off Earth by Tyler the Creator playing softly in the background. How romantic.
Recluse:Technical:We thought of ways to show that there is a wall blocking me from seeing the could to make life easier on our tech team we requested for there to be a spotlight on whenever the couple spoken and off when ever the reporter didn't speak.
Shrink:Technical :A warm light trough out the scene because our dialogue is so strong our lighting needs to be calm
Upgraded Story-line
For the story line we arranged the whole story to make sense so that meant putting information first that a love story. But all the love and information fell into the Wedding video that involved everyone and most importantly the love and information all in one.In addition we added quotes about love and Information to allow that message that of how love can be negative as well as positive just as information. make the play our own . We were the boss.
Evaluation
In conclusion of our context section for our final performance the added parts were a success because they were different from any other Love and In formation performance. we worked well as a team to create a professional and amazing ensemble ,from the lights to the quotes for the intervals. The play came out amazing. The feedback given about the set was great they said it was eye-catching and it grasped the information aspect of the play.

INFORMATION
The gain of information is essential to life and living.
Love and Information prompts the audience to think about
the types of information we come into contact with on a daily
basis, including gossip, secrets, data and facts, as well as the
subject matter of information such as personal, historical,
scientific, etc. The various scenes also pose the question of
whether information has currency and if some pieces of
information are more valuable than others.

Set
Newspapers on the floor and blocks to contrast with the information aspect of the play and we using it would be used as props also. Pipes that is open to interpretation. Giving of a vibe of it being anything that the characters wanted it to be, it was. For example trapped space, a spaceship or even a house.
